Sir: -
I am directed by the First Commissioner of His
Majesty's Works, etc., to acknowledge the receipt of
Mr. Campbell's letter of the 17th instant transmit-
ing copy of correspondence relative to a site for
the extension of the British Post Office at Shanghai,
and, in reply, I am to state, for the information of
the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, that the
Board are prepared to grant a lease of the land in
question for a term of 99 years at an annual rental
of 1,200 taels, and, upon learning that the Secretary
of State for the Colonies accepts these terms, the
Board will instruct their Architect in Shanghai to
take the necessary steps for completing the arrange-
ment.
